SMART Trials at Birmingham, as athletes prepare for the Greatest Show on Earth!

As one of the endurance coaches on the National Coach Development Programme (NCDP) with England Athletics, Nadeem Shaikh, Managing Director of SMART  Way Forward, was invited to the UK Olympic Trials at Alexander Palace Stadium in Birmingham on 22nd-24th June.

This was the last opportunity for athletes to achieve the ‘A’ standards required within their sporting discipline in order for them to be considered or selected to represent Team GB at this year’s London Olympics.

In conjunction with the trials, England Athletics had also organised a special coach development weekend for some of their national mentors and mentees to help develop their coaching skills even further.

A number of interactive workshops were delivered by staff from both UK Athletics and England Athletics, helping coaches training athletes at grassroots level understand the importance of areas such as Sports Psychology, The Importance and value of Deep Practice, Youth Endurance and the transition of Athletes moving to university.

“What a fantastic weekend!” said Nadeem. “I would like to thank England Athletics and UK Athletics for kindly inviting me to attend this weekend.  It is always nice to interact with other like minded athletics coaches, share good practice and learn new training methods.  Personally, I found the workshops very useful and I am looking forward to putting theory into practice over the coming months.

“In addition, it was great to watch some of our most talented athletes compete at the trials. Best of luck to all the athletes representing Team GB at the London Olympics.”
